What originated as a small village has grown to become the modern city suburb of Inchicore. This part of Dublin is about three miles west of the city centre and right beside the River Liffey.

The late nineteenth century saw significant industrialisation of the area, which was particularly known for its west city tramway terminus and engineering works. Inchicore became part of the expanding city of Dublin over a century ago.

Several renowned poets have resided in this area. These include Michael Hartnett, who wrote some of his 'Inchicore Haiku' here, and Thomas Kinsella, who won the UCD Ulysses Medal.

Places to visit in Inchicore

A worthy visit for tourists is Goldenbridge cemetery, Ireland's first dedicated Roman Catholic cemetery opened after the granting of Catholic Emancipation in 1829. Independent Ireland's first government leader, W. T. Cosgrave, is buried here.

Educational facilities include the all girls Mercy Secondary School, a Roman Catholic institution. There are also primary schools, among them the Oblates National School and St. Michael's National School, not to mention Inchicore College of Further Education.

The numerous sports clubs in Inchicore include the area's Gaelic Athletic Association outfit, Liffey Gaels. There's also the local soccer club St. Patrick's Athletic, commonly nicknamed St. Pat's.

A key part of Inchicore life is Black Lion Inn, which has been established since 1734.

Not far from Inchicore is George Frederic Handel Hotel, named after the renowned composer.

Transport in Inchicore

To call Inchicore well-connected by bus would be a huge understatement. Responsible for a huge fraction of the area's bus services is the local operator Dublin Bus.

The useful services this company offers include the 122, which can take you to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children; the 25X, 51X, 66X and 67X, which all enable students to easily reach University College Dublin; and the 40, which provides a link to Liffey Valley Shopping Centre. There are also buses in Inchicore provided by Bus Eireann and Mortons Coaches.
