Description
Most plastic oil storage tanks should last about 20 to 25 years. You should try and inspect your oil tank at least twice a year for any signs of cracks. Even if a small crack appears you need to have it checked. During the winter if you have a small crack in your tank and water gets in and the water freezes, it expands and makes the crack bigger each time until it eventually breaks down completely or if your tank was not fitted properly this can also cause strain which will in turn cause your tank to crack or spill.
On the other hand steel tanks can last much longer but people need to maintain these tanks every 5 years or so to make sure they don't corrode from the outside i.e. paint with an anti rust paint and in particular the bottom of the tank where it comes into contact with the concrete pillars. There should also be a plastic damp proof between your steel tank and your pillar walls, if this is not the case they often break down within 15 to 17 years. We find that people paint the top and sides of their steel tank as it is too difficult to paint the bottom where most of the corrosion and rust appears but can't be seen.
You should always inspect your oil storage tank for any sign of rust or damage.
